I have just experienced one of the most exciting weeks of my life. I decided to take the plunge and enter the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) NSW Professional Photography Awards for the very first time. And boy I’m glad I did.
It was quite daunting to actually decide to enter, not just because I have only been a member since last year so this is all very new to me, but more so because it is the recognised industry organisation of professional photography in Australia, so my images would be judged among work of the industry’s best BY the industry’s best. It was a choice that was really going to put myself out there.
I couldn’t be happier with my results. I earned myself a Silver Award for one of my images entered into the Illustrative category AND a Silver with Distinction Award for a print entered into the Travel category. Travel photography really is my ultimate passion, so to be awarded in this particular division is an true honour. My prints were judged by some of the most respected and admired talent in the photographic industry, so to receive positive comments about my work was quite mind blowing to say the least. YOU…, really like my image?? **pinch myself**
I didn’t think it could get any better until I attended the Awards Presentation Night a couple of days after the print judging had taken place. I was mostly there to find out who the overall category winners were, and of course to support and cheer on my friends who had achieved amazing results themselves. What I didn’t expect was to hear my name read out as a Finalist in the NSW Emerging Photographer of the Year category!! I nearly fell off my chair.
If you had told me last year when I joined the AIPP as an Emerging Member that I would be sitting here today typing this, I would have given you a funny look. I am so unbelievably proud of my results and feel so enriched by the entire awards process. It has been an honour to spend those few days in the judging rooms among such outstanding talent, witnessing such brilliant work being judged and just simply absorbing it all.
I don’t want to sound cliche, but this experience has taught me that anything is possible, no matter what your fears try to tell you, if you only believe in yourself and follow your heart.
